“Nursing affair”-bachelor department

Modern state of education development, especially medical education, needs great changes. Preparation of workers has always been the main way of development in any country. The most widely-spread speciality in health care system is the profession of medical nurse. The reform of health care system, which takes place nowadays in Ukraine, shift to the principles of giving the first medical-sanitary help to people and budget-insurance medicine, marketing relations’ establishment, the development of scientific and professional relations with other countries need to make the existing system of nursing education better for preparation of specialists, who will be due to the world’s standards.
  According to the decree of Ministry of Health Protection of Ukraine № 8.02-31/1237 on the 27th of July, 1998 the admission of students for the department “Nursing affair” of the II level of accreditation with the evening form of studying was done. After the change of college status, 8 years of graduation were made, and 164 specialists were prepared. Every third graduate is an excellent graduate. But these results are expected, because only the best nurses, doctor’s assistants and midwives of Rivne region enter the college. Among the applicants there are 40% of excellent students. Today there are 69 students at the department. Among them there are 12 head medical nurses, and 12 senior medical nurses of medical institutions in the region.
  The head of the department is the teacher-methodologist of highest category, the doctor-practitioner Mykhailo Rostyslavovych Demianchuk.
  The evening form of studies gives some advantages. Working during the day at medical institutions, students constantly improve their practical skills, and that gives the opportunity not to include into the studying programme the practices, and this decreases the material expenses.
  The preparation programme of nurses-bachelors includes such subjects, which prepared not only highly-qualified nurses, but also the organizers of medical activity. During the classes of clinical pharmacology the students study the peculiarities of medicines’ influence on different organism systems, the doses, side effects and the possibility of medicines’ combined therapy.
  The programme in health care economics and medical service marketing introduces the studying of health care organization in market relations and providing its economical effectiveness, ways of reforming the medical help system due to the economic laws of the market.
  Studying ‘management’ discipline and ‘leadership in nursing’ gives basic knowledge in management, relates it with the specifics of nurses’ work, shows manager’s role in the organization’s activity, considers the problems of informational estimation of nursing.
  The family medicine is widely spread in the world, but it only starts its life in Ukraine. That’s why the course “Nursing in family medicine” is necessary for nurses’ preparation. Family nurse has to know the methods of patients’ preparation for the classical examinations, has to be a good psychologist in solving the family problems, and has to popularize the healthy way of life.
   The national programme of nursing development includes the preparation of the medical nurse-organizator and nursing leader, medical college teacher, medical nurse of general practice – family nurse, who will be able to cooperate with patients’ families, to give the qualified help to the patients at home, to do scientific work in nursing problems. Taking into consideration this character of nurses’ preparation the subject “The teaching art” is taught in college. During the shift from the medical to nursing model, the future specialists have to know the communication art in details, have to speak properly, to listen, to explain, to make sure, to teach. The new course is based on the achievements of the world’s and national pedagogical, medical, nursing science; and this course is adapted to the medical colleges.
  While giving medical help to industry workers or conducting sanitary examination, future bachelors need the knowledge about the possible influence of professional factors on the organism. That’s why the elective course “Nursing in professional pathology” is introduced in college.
  27 teachers work at this department. Among them there is 1 doctor of sciences, 11 candidates of sciences, 2 teachers-methodologists, 2 senior teachers, 8 teachers of highest category, 4 teachers of the Ist category, 3 excellent professors of Ukrainian education. They write new text-books and books, adapted to the new studying process. Great attention is paid to the teachers from the practical health protection. Such teachers as Ya.K.Stoliarchuk, I.G.Bobiak, A.P.Reznikov, I.V.Gushchuk, V.F.Sadovets, O.V.Yevtushenko, I.S.Khoronzhevska, and N.S.Batura systematically realize the connection between the theory and practice at the classes. So after graduation our graduates become the head and senior nurses of departments in medical establishments in Rivne region. Having improved their knowledge, 8 graduates teach at medical college.
  The bachelor preparation will give an opportunity not only make the medical help to the people better, but also to make it closer to the world’s level. Graduate, who went through the first level of preparation (doctor’s assistant, nurse), has an opportunity to go through the second level (nurse-bachelor), and in future – the third level. Such principle decreases the material expenses, and also to realize the only in the world principle of nurses’ preparation. Today the question of changing the medical college into the Nursing institute arises.
  Bachelor-specialist of the II level of accreditation, after graduation, can obtain such positions: family doctor’s assistant, senior medical nurse, social worker. Besides, the medical nurse-bachelor can teach “Nursing affair” at college, be the head of surgical block, and conduct the studying of other medical nurses.
  Since the 3rd January, 2008 in medical institutions the positions of head doctor in nursing and coordinator of nursing were introduced, and these positions can be obtained only by nurses with bachelor’s degree in nursing affair.
